(A good case could be made out for believing that repentan...)
A good case could be made out for believing that repentance is one of the least used words in the Christian church today. In a world that will not tolerate the mention of sin, and in churches where it has been defined only in sociological terms, the biblical teaching on repentance has inevitably been ignored. Knowing what repentance is, and actually repenting are essential to true Christianity. Jesus Christ himself said that if we do not repent, we will perish! It is vital, therefore, to read and study what Scripture has to say about this theme. Few better guides have existed in this or any other area of spiritual experience than Thomas Watson. He was a master of both Scripture and the human heart, and wrote with a simplicity and directness that keeps his work fresh and powerful for the twenty-first century.

(Repentance is purgative—do not fear the working of this p...)
Repentance is purgative—do not fear the working of this pill. "Smite your soul," said Chrysostom, "smite it; it will escape death by that stroke!" How happy it would be, if we were more deeply affected with sin, and our eyes did swim in tears of repentance. We may clearly see the Spirit of God moving in the waters of repentance, which though troubled, are yet pure. Moist tears of repentance dry up sin—and quench the wrath of God. Repentance is the nourisher of piety, the procurer of mercy. The more regret and trouble of spirit we have first at our conversion, the less we shall feel afterwards.

Thomas Watson (1620-1686) was Thomas Watson is one of the most famous Puritan preachers in history, and his writings during the 17th century are still read across the world today. He was an English, Nonconformist, Puritan preacher and author. He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was noted for remarkably intense study. Based on Philippians 4:11, "I have learned, in whatever state I am therewith to be content", Watson considers the great dishonor done to almighty God by the sin of discontent. The doctrine of Christian contentment is clearly illustrated and profitably applied. The special cases where, through changes in providences, discontentment most commonly arises are examined and preservatives are applied to the soul. This is one of Watson's most treasured works, and shares equal billing with Jeremiah Burrough's classic The Rare Jewel of Christian Continent. It was first published in a lithograph of a 19th century edition, but the publishers were compelled to retypest that work and publish it in an entirely new book so as to give an even broader readership

(Thomas Watson's book 'All Things For Good' provides the b...)
Thomas Watson's book 'All Things For Good' provides the biblical answer to the contemporary question; Why do bad things happen to good people? Thomas Watson, the 17th century minister of St. Stephen's Walbrook, believed he faced two great difficulties in his pastoral ministry. The first was making the unbeliever sad, in the recognition of his need of God's grace. The second was making the believer joyful in response to God s grace. He believed the answer to the second difficulty could be found in Paul's teaching in Romans 8.28: God works all things together for good for his people. First published in 1663 (under the title 'A Divine Cordial'), the year after Watson and some two thousand other ministers were ejected from the Church of England and exposed to hardship and suffering, 'All Things For Good' contains the rich exposition of a man who lived when only faith in God's Word could lead him to such confidence. Thomas Watson's exposition is always simple, illuminating and rich in practical application. He explains that both the best and the worst experiences work for the good of God's people. He carefully analyses what it means to be someone who 'loves God' and is 'called according to his purpose'.

(The writings of Thomas Watson (c1620-1686) have been a so...)
The writings of Thomas Watson (c1620-1686) have been a source of encouragement and enlightenment to Christians for over 320 years; but to the modern reader their language and structure can often hinder the enjoyment of their true value. In 1915, Hamilton Smith (1862-1943) set out to make the heart of the writings (and of Watson himself) more accessible to the reader of his day. He organised a selection of extracts under topical headings covering the themes of warnings, healing, giving, longing, contentment, poverty, afflictions, persecution, temptation, contention, preaching, praying, meditation, departing and crowning. Retaining Watson's original text, he created a volume of devotional readings which have stood the test of time in sharing Watson's practical wisdom and apt illustrations. The publisher is pleased to make this classic work available once again.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. (The excess of impiety which has broken down the banks of ...)
The excess of impiety which has broken down the banks of common civility and modesty, at first led my thoughts to these ensuing subjects. The spirits of men are leavened with atheism-and their lives are stained with debauchery. I do not know what to call them but baptized heathens. I am sure the floods of sin are risen, even to a deluge. There is a generation among us of whom I may say, that they militate against religion. They are so exceedingly profane that they esteem the Bible to be a fable-and would jeer all holiness out of the world! The "prince of the power of the air" now works in the children of disobedience Thomas Watson was an English preacher and author who obtained great fame preaching until the Restoration when he was ejected as the vicar of St. Stephen's Walbrook for noncomformity. Watson continued to exercise his ministry privately and upon the Declaration of Indulgence in 1672 he obtained a license to preach at the great hall in Crosby House.

The two great graces essential to a saint in this life, are faith and repentance. These are the two wings by which he flies to heaven. Faith and repentance preserve the spiritual life-as heat and water preserve the physical life. The grace which I am going to discuss is repentance. Thomas Watson (1620 – 1686) was an English Puritan preacher and author. He did his studies at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and in 1646 he was assigned to pastor a church in London where he was known for his strong Presbyterian views. In 1651 he was imprisoned for his involvement in the recall of Charles II of England and then released in 1652. He was famous for his preaching in London, but eventually removed during the Nonconformity movement. Still he continued to preach privately. And in 1672 with the Declaration of Indulgence he was allowed to preach again in London at Crosby House. When his health began to fail he retired to Essex, England where he died in 1686.

He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was noted for remarkably intense study.
In 1646 he commenced a sixteen-year pastorate at Saint Stephen"s, Walbrook. He was released on 30 June 1652, and was formally reinstated as vicar of Saint Stephen"s Walbrook. He obtained great fame and popularity as a preacher until the Restoration, when he was ejected for Nonconformity.
Notwithstanding the rigor of the acts against dissenters, Watson continued to exercise his ministry privately as he found opportunity.
Upon the Declaration of Indulgence in 1672 he obtained a license to preach at the great hall in Crosby House. After preaching there for several years, his health gave way, and he retired to Barnston, Essex, where he died suddenly while praying in secret.
He was buried on 28 July 1686.
