He was treasurer of the bishopric of Winchester from 1538 to his death and Keeper of Farnham Castle, Surrey from 1540 to death. A strong Catholic, he served as a Master of Requests during the reign of Queen Mary I from 1553 to 1558 and was knighted on 2 October 1553.
He was elected a Member of the Parliament of England for Hampshire seven times between 1547 and 1559.
