Background
He was born at Middleton Hall, Middleton, Warwickshire, the second son of Francis Willughby, the famed mathematician and naturalist ( who preferred to be known by this aberrant spelling of the family name), and was educated at Street Catharine"s College, Cambridge and Jesus College, Cambridge.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1693.
He was High Steward of the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield from 1714. In 1728 he was listed as one of the subscribers to the Cyclopaedia of Ephraim Chambers.
