(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from The Correspondence of William Cowper, Vol. 1...)
Excerpt from The Correspondence of William Cowper, Vol. 1 of 4: Arranged in Chronological Order, With Annotations William Cowper is universally acknowledged to be the greatest of English letter-writers. How strange, therefore, that over one hundred years from the time of his death should have elapsed before a practically complete edition of his correspondence, arranged chronologically, with annotations, should be given to the world. In all, three bulky collections of Cowper's letters have hitherto been published, those of Hayley, Grimshawe, and Southey. Hayley, with the fear of Lady Hesketh before his eyes; and Grimshawe, owing to pure incapacity either to understand Cowper or to produce a respectable work of any kind; mutilated the letters mercilessly. Grimshawe, afraid, one would suppose, lest his readers should wreck their chances of future happiness by venturing on a smile, took peculiar delight in striking out the facetious passages - often requests for various small articles, or thanks for presents - which are among the best specimens of Cowper's playful humour. (Excerpt from The Correspondence of William Cowper, Vol. 2...)
Excerpt from The Correspondence of William Cowper, Vol. 2 of 4: Arranged in Chronological Order, With Annotations My Dear Friend, - Entertaining some hope that Mr. Newton's next letter would furnish me with the means of satisfying your inquiry on the subject of Dr. Johnson's opinion, I have till now delayed my answer to your last; but the information is not yet come, Mr. Newton having intermitted a week more than usual since his last writing. When I receive it, favourable or not, it shall be communicated to you; but I am not very sanguine in my expectations from that quarter. Very learned and very critical heads are hard to please. He may perhaps treat me with lenity for the sake of my subject and design, but the composition I think will hardly escape his censure. Though all doctors may not be of the same mind, there is one doctor at least, whom I have lately discovered, my professed admirer. He too, like Johnson, was with difficulty persuaded to read, having an aversion to all poetry, except the Night Thoughts; which on a certain occasion, when being confined on board a ship he had no other employment, he got by heart. Excerpt from The Correspondence of William Cowper, Vol. 3 of 4: Arranged in Chronological Order, With Annotations My Dear Friend, - I have made you wait long for an answer, and am now obliged to write in a hurry. But lest my longer silence should alarm you, hurried as I am, still I write. I told you, if I mistake not, that the circle of my correspondence has lately been enlarged; and it seems still increasing, which, together with my poetical business, makes an hour a momentous affair. Pardon an unintentional pun. You need not fear for my health. It suffers nothing by my employment. I hope also that you have no need to fear lest I should hereafter suffer by disappointment. No care shall be wanting on my part to guard against it. I return you many thanks for all your friendly services in the matter of subscription. When you saw Johnson that business was so much in its infancy, that it was not likely that many names should have been entered in his book. Neither General Cowper, nor his son, nor Lady Hesketh have yet given in their lists. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (Excerpt from The Life of Colonel Fred Burnaby It has gen...)
Excerpt from The Life of Colonel Fred Burnaby It has generally been assumed that the age of Romance, in so far as England is concerned, disappeared with the last of the Plantagenets, and that Henry the Seventh's Coronation Service was at once its farewell and requiem; but a more romantic career than that of Frederick Gustavus Burnaby, though it was passed in the reign of Victoria, can scarcely be conceived. He was a Coeurde-Lion in physique, strength, courage, and magnanimity; and though he lived in what he himself regarded as a tame and pusillanimous era, when Englishmen were inclined to surrender without protest to the first bully who presented himself the benefits which had come down to them from their clearer-eyed and more heroic fathers, he managed to crowd into a life of only forty-two years as many exciting incidents, accompanied by hair-breadth escapes, as would have satisfied even a Knight Templar. Moreover, the stirring events of that life follow one another with the rapidity of a swiftly moving panorama; brave deed succeeding brave deed, until lastly there comes the most thrilling scene of all - the terrible passage at arms on the field of Abou Klea - and the hero dead. "He was the only man whom I have ever met," says his old Harrow friend, Mr. H. H. Finch, "who was totally devoid of fear." To Burnaby stagnation was insufferable. For years he was one of the most popular men in England. He united in his person precisely those qualities which Englishmen most admire. Of a fertile invention, he never hesitated to take the initiative. He was perspicacious, determined, resourceful, tenacious, amazingly daring. WRIGHT, Thomas was born on May 16, 1859 in Olney. Son of W. S. Wright of Olney.
Studied at Buxton College Forest Gate.
His alma mater was the library of the British Museum. He has written biography, fiction, and poetry. One of the great dreams of his life— the establishment of a Cowper Museum at 2225 Olney—was realised at the Cowper Centenary (25 April 1900), when Mr.
W. H. Collingridge presented the poet’s house to the town and nation. The museum is rich in Cowper and Newton Manuscripts. He is the founder of the Cowper Society, 1900. Principal of Cowper School, Olney.
