Thomas Youngholm was born on November 5, 1949, in Oak Park, Illinois, the United States, to Bernard and Mary Jane Youngholm.
Thomas Youngholm received a bachelor's degree in Communication and a master's degree in Human Development.
Although Thomas Youngholm wrote his first book, The Celestial Bar (1994), as a novel, he makes no bones about the fact that its events and, more particularly, its ideas and feelings, reflect his own life’s struggle. The book is a fictionalized rendition of Youngholm’s own spiritual awakening, which occurred without warning during a meditation session. The impact of this awakening was life-changing for Youngholm and prompted him to speak and teach the lessons he had learned. Writing the novel was, for him, primarily a further step in spreading his vision to a wide audience.
Educated in communications and human relations in the Chicago area, Youngholm worked as a family therapist for the sheriffs' office in Cook County. After a time he felt “burnt out”; his marriage suffered, ending in divorce. When he was nearly killed twice in one day, he took it as his cue to leave town. Moving to Florida, he became the owner-operator of a floating restaurant on a houseboat in the Keys. However, the houseboat restaurant. which had been fairly successful for him, sank during a storm.
Youngholm moved across the continent to San Diego, California, a place he had long wanted to live, and worked as a waiter and a training consultant. Feeling stressed, he read a great deal on stress management and practiced a variety of relaxation techniques, including yoga and meditation.
In his novel, Youngholm’s alter ego is an aspiring composer named Jonathan “Digger” Taylor. Having gone through a series of failures quite similar to those Youngholm himself experienced - including a failed restaurant - Taylor tries to lose himself in shallow recreations, but feels haunted night and day by a nightmarish foreboding. A possible big break comes when he is asked to audition one of his compositions for the soundtrack of a movie. Taking a nap before the audition, he tries to escape the foreboding, nightmarish force by entering a cosmic tavern - the “celestial bar” of the title. In this dream setting, he meets Ahmay, a Shoshone medium who is Taylor’s spiritual guide; Ramda, a sapient computer; and Paula, Taylor’s soulmate and love. These characters teach him the secrets of PEIS and help him through the audition.

2016Youngholm believes every person has at least two spirit guides that provide answers to the problems of life. The answers may be in a very subtle form; they may be expressed as a hunch or feeling rather than an overt message; therefore, the individual must remain quiet and listen carefully to what is within.
Youngholm was married, but his marriage ended with a divorce.
