Educated Saint Mary's College, Baltimore.

Career

Entered United States Navy, 1815, served in Mediterranean and against West. Indian pirates. Promoted Lieutenant, 1825. Served in Pacific, 1826.

Served in ship Falmouth in Pacific, 1831-1834.

In command of receiving ship, Philadelphia, 1834-1836. Promoted commander, 1841.

With Ordnance Department, Washington, District of Columbia, 1844-1851. Stationed in Pacific to watch over William Walker’s expedition to Lower California, also blocked British and French aggressive naval moves in Hawaii, 1851-1855.

Promoted captain, 1855, commanded Norfolk Navy Yard, 1855-1859.

On duty in Mediterranean and in suppression of African slave trade, 1859-1861. Promoted commodore, 1862. Commanded Baltimore Navy Yard, 1862-1865.
