With Ordnance Department, Washington, District of Columbia, 1844-1851. Stationed in Pacific to watch over William Walker’s expedition to Lower California, also blocked British and French aggressive naval moves in Hawaii, 1851-1855.
Promoted captain, 1855, commanded Norfolk Navy Yard, 1855-1859.
On duty in Mediterranean and in suppression of African slave trade, 1859-1861. Promoted commodore, 1862. Commanded Baltimore Navy Yard, 1862-1865.
