Appointed Second lieutenant, April 26, 1861. Mustered out, July 31, 1861. Second lieutenant, November 28, 1861.
First lieutenant, February 12, 1863.
Captain, December 13, 1864. Mustered out, August 7, 1865.
Appointed First lieutenant, June 12, 1867. Advanced through grades to brigadier general, June 22, 1905.
Assistant adjutant general 1st Brigade, 2d Cavalry Division, Army of the Potomac, December 1864-June 1865.
Twice wounded during Civil War. Served almost continuously on the frontier, 1867-1894, where participated in many of the Indian campaigns and engagements. Was thrice mentioned in General Orders “for good judgment, energy and conspicuous gallantry in action with Indians”.
Commanded 6th United States Cavalry at battle of San Juan Hill in Spanish-American War, where was recommended for a brevetted “for gallantry in action”.
