Began practice in Blackville, South Carolina., 1908. Member South Carolina. House of Representatives from Barnwell County, 1911-1912, from Richland County, 1925-1926.

Member judiciary committee of House and chairman special commission on investigation and consolidation of state offices.

Attorney general of South Carolina. 3 terms, 1913-1918 inclusive.

Commissioned lieutenant colonel governor’s staff, 1913. Major judge advocate United States Army, 1919, and assigned as chief counsel War Department Board of Appraisers.

Then major judge advocate.

Later lieutenant colonel J.A.G. (Reserve) Commissioned by Governor, April 17, 1944, as member Committee to Revise Code of Civic Procedure of South Carolina. Commissioner State and County Elections, 1948. President National Association Attorneys General, 1917.

Honorary member Veterans Foreign Wars.
