Fr. Thomas Green, S.J., draws on his vast background as a retreat master and spiritual writer to make available to a much wider audience the retreat experience based on the classic Spiritual Exercises by St. Ignatius of Loyola. While many scholarly and professional treatments have been done on the Spiritual Exercises, for the grassroots Catholic , St. Ignatius' classic is often too mechanical and hard to grasp. This book can be used in may ways. It can be used by retreat directors for one-to-one direction of retreatants; by retreatants making a retreat with a director; or by more experienced retreatants who wish to be alone with the Lord . In addition, this work can be used for a closed retreat of eight days as broken down in the chapters. Or it could be used for a retreat in daily life where a person could devote 30 to 60 minutes a day to the themes of this book and prolong the retreat over several weeks or months. Fr. Green has a profound grasp of the heart of St. Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises and he has the talent to express it in simple words that all can understand. With his clear language he makes the power and wisdom of the Ignatian Exercises accessible to all who want to make a retreat. -Fr. Kenneth Baker, S.J., Author, Inside the Bible Fr. Thomas Green, S.J., is a well-known spiritual writer and retreat master with several books published on the spiritual life, including Drinking from the Well and Prayer and Common Sense.

("When the Well Runs Dry" builds on Green's classic and be...)
"When the Well Runs Dry" builds on Green's classic and bestselling primer on prayer "Opening to God". It encourages readers to re-examine their perspectives on prayer and argues that prayer has less to do with what readers do or know and more to do with what God does in them. "With kind humor and easygoing compassion, this Jesuit explains how to find our way through the "dark night of the soul," those weeks, months and sadly, even years when God's face seems inscrutable." - "Weavings".

(The laity is not called to live some distant and detached...)
The laity is not called to live some distant and detached monastic life, but to live the gospel on the ground of their ordinary daily lives. Marriage, family, work -- the whole way of life -- "is spiritualilty", says Fr. Green. He helps us to understand what is distinctive about lay spirituality, reviews its historical roots and discusses its scriptural and conciliar support.

(Green provides sound advice on basic issues in the spirit...)
Green provides sound advice on basic issues in the spiritual life. We often go astray because we fail to use common sense. He shows how we can better cooperate with God by using our own good judgment and focus on love in both prayers and action.
