Career
Joined Navy at age of 12, 1871. Commanded 113-foot torpedo boat Childers, on her voyage to Melbourne 1884 (thanks of Victorian Government and Admiralty for account of voyage and successful accomplishment). As first lieutenant of Conquest, commanded battalion of seamen in Vitu Expedition 1890, and also acted as Vice-Consul at Beira and Mapondas during Portuguese difficulties in 1891 (thanked by Foreign Ollice).
Commander of Northampton and Curacoa 1892-1899.
Specially promoted for success in starting new scheme of training. Captain of Boscawen, Albion, Russell, and R.N.E. College, Devonport.
Rear-Admiral 1908. J served on staff of vice-Admiral commanding 3rd division Home Fleet, 1909-1910.
Commanding White Fleet in manoeuvres, 1909, and 4th division battleships in 1910. Received Royal j Humane Society’s medal for saving life, 1881.
General African medal, 1890 (despatches)’. Queen's Jubilee medal, 1897.
Second in command MediI terranean Fleet since 1910.
