Joined Navy at age of 12, 1871. Commanded 113-foot torpedo boat Childers, on her voyage to Melbourne 1884 (thanks of Victorian Government and Admiralty for account of voyage and successful accomplishment). As first lieutenant of Conquest, commanded battalion of seamen in Vitu Expedition 1890, and also acted as Vice-Consul at Beira and Mapondas during Portuguese difficulties in 1891 (thanked by Foreign Ollice).
