He was the son of State Senator Thomas I. Chatfield (1818–1884) and Lucy B. (Goodrich) Chatfield. He graduated Bachelor of Arts from Yale College in 1893. And Bachelor of Laws from Columbia Law School in 1896.
He was nominated to the court by Theodore Roosevelt on December 13, 1906, to a seat vacated by Edward B. Thomas, confirmed by the United States Senate on January 9, 1907, and received his commission on January 9, 1907.
His service terminated with his death.
