Served until 1865, rising to rank brevetted brigadier general.
Prominent in enlistment of colored troops. Entered Rochester Theological Seminary, 1865.
Graduate same, 1868 (Doctor of Laws, Franklin College, 1894. Doctor of Divinity, University of Chicago, 1874).
Professor homiletics and church history, Baptist Theological Seminary, Chicago 7 years. Principal normal schools, Providence, Rhode Island, and elsewhere. Commissioner Indian affairs, 1889-1893, Baptist minister, correspondent secretary American Baptist Home Mission Society, since 1893.
