Simmons, Thomas Jefferson was born on June 25, 1837 in Hickory Grove, Georgia, United States. Son of Allen G. and Mary (Cleveland) Simmons.

Education

Studied law under A. D. Hammond, Forsyth, Georgia.

Career

Admitted to Georgia- bar, 1857. Commissioned Lieutenant 6th Georgia Infantry, Confederate Army, 1861, lieutenant colonel, then colonel, 1862. Served in Virginia throughout Civil War, mainly in A.P. Hill’s Division of General James Longstreet’s Corps.

Delegate Georgia Constitutional Convention, to 1865. Member Georgia Senate, 1865, 71-77, president 1875, Chairman of Commission on finance and bonds. Judge Macon (Georgia) Circuit, 1878-1887.

Judge Georgia Supreme Court, 1887-1905, chief justice, 1894-1905.
