Retired by operation of law, November 15, 1896.
Advanced to rank of brigadier general retired, by act of April 23, 1904. Bvtd. lieutenant colonel and colonel, September 24, 1864, and brigadier general, March 13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious services during the war.
At various times acting adjutant general United States of America President Fort Stevens Lincoln National Military Park Association During Civil War in charge of organization and miscellaneous business of volunteer armies, and their disbanding as planned by him, subsequently closing certain War Department bureaus, with financial responsibility of $33,000,000. Made official tours observation and inspection to main parts of the United States and adjoining foreign territory.
