This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. 'And all this at bur expense,'--say the agriculturists. All this by the putting down of your injustice,'--is the answer. If the manufacturers were keeping down the wealth of the country by a tax on home-grown corn, the agriculturists would see clearly the propriety of allowing it to expand to its natural dimensions, by the removal of such an enormity. J c is but reversing the parties, to see that the case applies equally to the agriculturists. If up to the present moment the land-owners of the Isle of Wight had heen able to prevent the eating of any corn throughout the empire but their owu, and the country in this state of artificial depression was sinking under a load of debt hearing about the same proportion to the actual debt of the British empire that the population, wealth, and power of the Isle of Wight bear to those of the whole empire,--it would be difficult to prevent a minister from perceiving, that he had it in his power to annihilate the pressure of the debt, by the simple process of allowing Great Britain to be Great Britain instead of being the Isle of Wight, just the same opportunity is offered, by the removal of the present monopoly. That a government who were themselves part and parrel of the monopolists should not find this oat, it conceivable. Career
Active service in the army terminated in 1822, when he turned to writing, founding the Westminster Review, the organ of the ‘philosophical radicals’. He was the proprietor of the paper and chief contributor to it from 1829-1836. His anti-Corn Law writings were his most successful publications and he played a major role in the AntiCorn Law League.
