Admitted to bar, 1892.
Taught school, 1890-1891. Nominated for state legislature, 1891, but withdrew on account of minority as to age. Began practice in Mississippi, 1892.
Removed to Texas, 1896.
Delegate Populist National Convention, Saint Louis, 1896. Nominated for Congress by People's party, 6th District, Texas, 1898 (defeated).
Joined Democratic party, 1899, and campaigned in South Dakot, 1900 and in Illinois, Ohio, New York and Indiana, 1904. Removed to Oklahoma, 1901.
Member Territorial Council, 1903-1905.
United States Senator from the admission of Oklahoma as a state, 1907-March 4, 1921, reëlected for term 1931-1937.
