Commissioned ensign, United States Navy, 1901, and advanced through the grades to commodore, 1945. Retired from navy at own request, 1929. Recalled to active duty, February 1942.

Serving as chief of staff Eastern Sea Frontier. Manager of operations, Shell Oil Corporation, 1930-1941.
