Career
He attended school in Oxford, North Carolina, graduated from the University of Virginia in 1827, and began his law practice in Brunswick County. On May 14,1829, he married a first cousin, Cary Ann Gholson, who gave him two children. Gholson was a vestryman in the Episcopal church.
He moved to Petersburg, Virginia, in 1840 and to Richmond in 1848, practicing law in both places. He also served as president of the Bank of Petersburg and as president of a railroad company prior to the Civil War. A Whig, he supported the secession movement in Virginia.
From 1859 to 1863, he was judge of the State Circuit Court for the Fifth Circuit. He was elected a member of the second Confederate House where he favored a vigorous military policy and conscription for all able-bodied men. He served on the Conference, Judiciary, and special committees.
After the war, he established a cotton and tobacco commission house in Liverpool, England. In 1868, he returned to Petersburg.
Religion
"Peculiar institution" of slavery was not only expedient but also ordained by God and upheld in Holy Scripture.
Politics
Stands for preserving slavery, states' rights, and political liberty for whites. Every individual state is sovereign, even to the point of secession.
