Ordained priest Protestant Episcopal Church, 1836. 1st missionary sent to Africa by Protestant Episcopal Church, arrived Cape Palmas, Liberia, 1836, established mission on Mount Vaughan. Returned to American due to health, 1838.
Returned to Cape Palmas, 1839.
Stationed at Fishtown, 1845-1846. Returned to the United States, 1847.
Wrote papers and articles on gorilla (previously unknown in the United States), also on habits of chimpanzee, published in Boston Journal of Natural History, also in Proceedings of Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, served in parishes in Mississippi, Alabama, 1847-1850. Appointed associate secretary Episcopal Board Missions, 1868.
