Left for Victoria in July 185S, in the Eastern City (Captain Johnston), from Liverpool for Melbourne, which caught lire and was burned at sea. A merchantman with troops for India took the passengers off the burning vessel, and put them ashore at Cape of Good Hope. On arrival at Melbourne he went to the Victorian goldfields, and came to New Zealand in 1862, where he put in two years on the Otago goldfields.
He engaged in farming pursuits in the Oamaru district, which he has continued ever since. First elected to represent Waitaki, 1881. Represented Waitaki for three successive Parliaments, and when the electorates were reduced in 1890, he left Waitaki and was elected for Oamaru.
Has represented that constituency up to the present time. Minister of Lands and Agriculture and Commissioner of State Forests for New Zealand, 1900-1907.
