Thorsten studied architecture at the University of Gothenburg in Gothenburg, Vastra Gotaland, Sweden.
In New York, United States Mr. Billquist found employment as a draftsman in the office of McKim, Mead o White during a time when the firm was engaged in preparing plans tor the Boston Public Library and remained until the work was completed. He then moved to Pittsburgh, and for a few years worked in association with the firm of Longfellow, Alden & Harlow. In 1896 he was successful in winning the competition for the Allegheny Observatory in Pittsburg, subsequently established his own office in the city.
