Joined the Hungarian Social Democratic Party, 1908. During World War I, in the AustroHungarian Army. After 1915, POW in Russia.
Became one of the most active organizers of Bolshevik sympathizers among the POWs. Took part in the quelling of the left-SRs revolt in Moscow, July 1918. Active organizer of international brigades of the Red Army during the Civil War, which were often used for Cheka duties.
From January 1919, one of the leaders of the Hungarian Soviet Republic, in charge of state security, and responsible for Red terror operations. Visited Soviet Russia in May 1919 in an unsuccessful attempt to secure help from Lenin. After the fall of Soviet power in Hungary, killed by Hungarian anti-communists.
