Till Lindemann is a German musician, actor, and poet. He is most commonly recognized as the lead vocalist and frontman of the German Neue Deutsche Härte band Rammstein.
Background
Lindemann was born in Leipzig (then in East Germany) and grew up in the village of Wendisch-Rambow, the son of children's poet Werner Lindemann and journalist and writer Brigitte Hildegard "Gitta" Lindemann, who worked for Norddeutscher Rundfunk from 1992 until her retirement in 2002. His parents first met at a conference in Bitterfeld in 1959.
Education
At age 11 Till went to a sports school at the Empor Rostock Sports Club, and from 1977 to 1980 attended a boarding school.
Career
In 1978, Lindemann was a participant in the European Junior Swimming Championships in Florence finishing 11th in the 1500 m freestyle, and seventh in the 400 m freestyle swimming a time of 4'17"58 - was shortlisted to go to 1980 Olympics in Moscow but discontinued the sport soon after because of an injury.
Prior to agreeing to a vocation in music, Lindemann filled in as a bushel weaver, a disciple woodworker, a display expert, and even a peat cutter. He initially started his profession in music by playing the drums for a Schwerin-based trial rock band First Arsch in 1986, in the wake of leaving First Arsh, he played for a punk band called Feeling B – the band was once in the past possessed by Rammstein individuals which included Christoph Schneider, Christian Lorenz, and Paul H. Landers. Before sufficiently long, he started composing and building up his own verses. In 1994, the band participated in and won a challenge in Berlin that permitted them to record a four-track demo expertly.
Because of the gathering’s utilization of over-the-top fireworks normally done by Lindemann, he needed to move to Berlin during the band’s initial days. Following an occurrence that happened in 1996 that made a segment of the band’s set consume, Lindemann needed to get a declaration in fireworks so the band could perform with fireworks more expertly and securely than it had beforehand. With fireworks, you can make certain of consumes and Till has so become acclimated to getting scorched during exhibitions that it is nothing to him.
Later in the 1990s, Lindemann began to write lyrics, possibly based on phrases and words from poems that he was beginning to write. He says he "used to drum in a punk band that consisted of bass and drums. We used to work with guest-guitarists, usually Paul and Richard. We did a short tour where I changed instruments with the bassist in the encore, that was such a success, that Richard insisted on starting a project in which I would sing. Other people joined the band but only when I left Schwerin for Berlin did it take serious form."
In 1994, they entered and won a contest in Berlin that allowed them to record a four-track demo professionally. Lindemann moved to Berlin. Paul H. Landers formally joined the band, followed by the last member to join, Christian "Flake" Lorenz.
Subsequently, in November 2002 Lindemann's own project, the poetry book Messer was published. It consists of 54 poems compiled by Gert Hof, who is author of the book Rammstein and has been the band's pyrodesigner for the last seven years. This book was due to be re-printed in 2005 due to a campaign by a fansite.
In July 2010, Lindemann, along with Flake, was interviewed by heavy metal anthropologist Sam Dunn for the VH1 Classic series Metal Evolution, on the topic of shock rock.
In the Dresden gallery, Till presented his original writings of poems, along with the two sculptures in the book “In Silent Nights” in 2014.
On 4 January 4, 2015, Till announced that he would start a new band with Peter Tägtgren named Lindemann. The project's first album titled Skills in Pills was released in June 2015. On 22 November 2019, Lindemann released their second album, F&M.
Till is an atheist. He once told: "I'm not a man of faith. I’m as atheist as they come. If anything, I would call myself a Vitalist. I believe in the inner desires. Women. Fishing. Hunting. Everything that’s fundamental, even if it’s seen as offensive in our society. I’m convinced that things would be very different if more people only followed their desires instead of subverting them."
Politics
Responding to a question about the political views of Rammstein, Till said: "We come from the east and have grown up as a socialist. We used either punks or Goths - we hate Nazis! We still do the same thing, and nobody in America or Mexico would get the idea to us dense stuff like that."
Views
Lindemann himself describes his lyrics as "love songs." Some songs written by him have references to the 19th century or earlier literature. For example, Dalai Lama from the album Reise, Reise is an adaption from Goethe's Der Erlkönig. He also used more of Goethe's poems, as Rosenrot contains element from the poem Heidenröslein, while Feuer und Wasser has narrative elements from Friedrich Schiller's Der Taucher. Lindemann also used elements from Der Struwwelpeter by Heinrich Hoffmann for their eighth track on their album Rosenrot, Hilf mir. Mein Herz brennt has lyrics taken from a narrative line in German children's show, known as Das Sandmännchen.
Quotations:
"Loneliness sometimes gives me a quantity of creativeness - you're drinking another glass of wine and you're feeling even worse. Art doesn't work without pain; art also exists for compensating pain."
"Love is like a flower; even the most beautiful kind dies."
"You've got a kind of inner store. When things aren't going well, you just go inside and get a glass of travel preserves for your soul, open it and fill up on it."
"To explain the lyrics would be to take away the whole attraction and afterward perhaps the fans would even be disappointed. I would rather leave things in this area untouched so that everyone can bring their own interpretation and their own feeling to it."
Personality
Lindemann is not a stranger to injury, as he mentioned in Rammstein's early career that he'd gotten burned several times with unprofessionally rigged pyrotechnics. At a performance in Sweden in 2005, he received a knee injury on stage when keyboardist Flake accidentally ran into him while riding a Segway PT. This injury caused several tour dates in Asia to be canceled. During the filming of the band's music video for "Ich tu dir weh", Lindemann wanted a light put in his mouth to create a visually stunning effect. Bandmate Paul Landers suggested that he use a flesh-colored wire and run it along his cheek to shine a light into his mouth from the outside. Lindemann refused, and instead opted to have a surgical incision in his left cheek so that a light could be fed into his mouth directly, and largely out of sight.
Physical Characteristics:
Lindemann has a powerful stage presence; his vocal range is that of a Dramatic Baritone. Lindemann has the urge to press his voice with force from below however. He is also well known for his continuous tendency to use the alveolar trill, where he stated in an interview that he sings it out of instinct. His use of rolling his r's however has bought up criticism, where some critics compare this act to Adolf Hitler as he also rolled his r's. However, this trait could be connected to his youth years in Mecklenburg. In 2005, the New York Times commented on Lindemann's voice, saying "He commands a low, powerful bass rarely used in contemporary pop music, untrained but electrifying."
