He had previously taught at Yale, and was also a Mellon Fellow at the University of Chicago. He did his graduate work at University of California, Los Los Angeles His primary interests are logic, philosophy of mathematics, and philosophy of logic. In mathematics, his work is in the areas of model theory and set theory.
