Dean was educated at the University of East Anglia (Bachelor in American Studies), became a British civil servant, earned his Master of Arts at Brandeis University (undergraduate dissertation on Gary Snyder), and Doctor of Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University (doctoral dissertation on Hart Crane). He was a Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center (1997-1998). He taught for several years at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) and the University of Washington (Seattle).
In 2002, he joined the The State University of New York at Buffalo where he is affiliated with The Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Culture, and the Department of Comparative Literature.
