In 2009, Harding received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in history from University of Dublin, with his thesis on correspondence chess in Britain and Ireland, 1824–1914.

A basic knowledge of opening theory is essential for club players, even those who may have little time for study and for whom chess is merely a relaxing pastime, if they are to avoid losing games because of setbacks in the early stages against a more knowledgeable opponent. This book sets out to provide sufficient coverage of all openings, explaining the basic strategy of each variation, with the intention that a few hours' study of favourite lines will enable the reader to avoid these pitfalls in future. This updated edition uses the now universal algebraic notation. The authors are both journalists experienced at writing for the average player. Tim Harding is an Irish Olympiad player, while Leonard Barden is former British Champion and chess correspondent for "The Guardian" and "The Financial Times".

The Ponziani (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3)has been an opening that has been overlooked frequently through the years. However it was played quite frequently throughout the 80's in Master-level and above tournament play. White has many ways to challenge each variant of Black's setup. Harding shows that Black's game is not as easy as many Black theorists would want you to believe.

The Budapest, 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e5, is really a counterattack rather than a defense. It appeals to players who like to challenge White for the initiative early in the game. This particularly applies to the Fajarowicz Variation, 3.dxe4 Ne4, in which(by contrast with the 3..Ng4 main line of the Budapest) Black puts more emphasis on fighting for key squares than on seeking the early recapture of the pawn he has given up. He published a correspondence chess magazine Chess Mail from 1996 to 2006 and authored "The Kibitzer", a ChessCafe.com column from 1996 until 2015. In 2002, he was awarded the title Senior International Master of Correspondence Chess by the International Correspondence Chess Federation. Harding has lived in Dublin since 1976, writing a weekly column for The Sunday Press from then until 1995.
He is credited with coining the name Frankenstein–Dracula Variation in his 1975 Vienna Game book
