(Poetry. "Tim Seibles' version of our changing and growing...)
Poetry. "Tim Seibles' version of our changing and growing American speech range widely, from anguish to comedy, from transcendence to earthly bewilderment. The joy of reading these poems is like overhearing a very smart, crazy neighbor's thoughts as they move between philosophical inquiry and praise for the everyday"--Li-Young Lee.

( 2012 National Book Award Finalist in Poetry Crisply c...)
2012 National Book Award Finalist in Poetry Crisply comic, disarmingly frank, and aurally bold ” Publishers Weekly This collection by African American poet Tim Seibles explores a range of poetic form, including lyric, ode, narrative, and mystical. Like a "fast animal," the poet's voice can swiftly change direction and tone as he crisscrosses between present and past. Built like one single sustained song, Fast Animal is alive with music, ardor, and wit that flow in utterances that are uniquely Seibles' and his alone."Laure-Anne Bosselaar, author of The Hour Between From "Delores Jepps" It seems insane now, but she’d be standing soaked in schoolday morning light, her loose-leaf notebook, flickering at the bus stop, and we almost trembled at the thought of her mouth filled for a moment with both of our short names. I don’t know what we saw when we saw her face, but at fifteen there’s so much left to believe in Tim Seibles, who teaches at Old Dominion University, is the author of six previous books, including Body Moves and Hurdy-Gurdy. His poetry has been featured in Best American Poetry 2010. Seibles has been the recipient of an NEA grant for poetry and Open Voice award.

(Poetry. "Reading Tim Seibles reminds me of the Buddhist p...)
Poetry. "Reading Tim Seibles reminds me of the Buddhist parable of the burning house: everyone ignores the flames, pretends there is no smoke, no pain, no prospect of death. Or, if there is, it will only happen to someone else, someone in another world. According to these teachings, aversion and attachment are not the greatest barriers to fulfillment; it is indifference that endangers a soul. Not to embrace or confront what is undeniably there but to detach ourselves and retreat. It is precisely this indifference that these poems challenge with lyric insistence - begging, assailing, teasing, affirming. In this mystical, romantic and political collection, Seibles is willing to take a chance, any chance to engage the general malaise of our times. He is a musician of the spirit and of the body, and it is that quality which carries us forward breath by breath, line by line. The journey is oddly enchanting, even transformative"--Nin Andrews.

(Poetry. African American Studies. "From the 'sweet scat' ...)
Poetry. African American Studies. "From the 'sweet scat' and 'jump rope hymns' of wonder and wistfulness to the transformational, lithe, sexually charged energy of jazz, HURDY-GURDY earnestly explores the differences between what we want, what we get, and what we must be willing to pursue at any cost. This is an exciting book—at once fluid, shapely, and steady as stone—whose tensions lead us to an authentic meditative wholeness."—Mark Cox "This is not a poetry of the highfalutin violin nor the somber cello, but a melody you heard somewhere that followed you home. Elegant and silly, irreverent, fun and funny, Tim Seibles' poetry celebrates the spirit's little moments of holy joy."—Sandra Cisneros
