counsel governor political leader
Timothy Michael Healy was born on May 17, 1855 in Bantry, County Cork, Ireland.
He started work as a railway clerk in 1868.
In 1878 he became a London correspondent for the American periodical "The Nation", and in 1879 visited the United States as secretary to the Irish political leader Charles Stewart Parnell. The following year he was elected to Parliament by the city of Wexford. Healy's great desire was to improve the condition of land tenants in Ireland, where absentee landlordism was gravely retarding the country's recovery from the famines and mass emigrations of 1846 and 1847. The condition was partly, but not substantially, alleviated when Prime Minister William E. Gladstone introduced the (Irish) Land Act of 1881.
Healy was admitted to the Irish bar in 1884 and became a queen's counsel in 1899.
He was admitted to the English bar in 1903 and became a king's counsel in 1910. During the years between 1884 and 1910 his close association with Parnell made him an energetic champion of Irish nationalism and home rule. Although he encouraged the Irish to fight for Great Britain in World War I, he strongly opposed conscription. The proposed partition of Ireland eventually led him to withdraw from Parliament and support the Sinn Fein movement. Nevertheless, he was appointed first governor general of the Irish Free State in 1922.
