He graduated with Bachelor (summa cum laude) from Rice University in 1992, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science at University of British Columbia in 1995 at the age of 19.

He is currently an associate editor for the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Transactions on Algorithms (TALG), and the International Journal of Computational Geometry and Applications. Chan has published extensively. His research covers Data Structures, Algorithms and Computational geometry.
He is also a member of the editorial board of Algorithmica, Discrete and Computational Geometry, as well as Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications.
