Educated at Franson Christian High School and at Matsapa Swazi National High School where he matriculated in 1958.
For most of the next nine years he was absorbed in academic life. After graduating Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy in 1962 at the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland he was awarded a scholarship to Howard University, Washington, DC, where he obtained his Master of Arts in Government in 1965. He spent 18 months at the School of International Studies in the American University at Washington, DC but left in 1967 to enter Swaziland government service in November without completing his Doctorate of Philosophy.
Starting as an Assistant Secretary he settled in quickly and was soon Senior Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Mines. In 1970 he was appointed Permanent Secretary after a course at the University of Sussex, England. Since then he has travelled to Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium, Germany and Britain. He represented Swaziland at a Commonwealth conference held in April 1972 at London to assess prospects of association with the European Economic Community.
