In 1959 Tiruppattur graduated from Banaras Hindu University and received Bachelor of Science degree. In 1961 he received a Master of Science degree from Banaras Hindu University. Also in 1966 he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Columbia University, New York City.
From 1968 to 1970 T. Ramakrishnan worked as an Assistant research physicist at the University of California. He held a position of the Assistant professor and professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, 1970-1978. From 1978 to 1981 he worked as a Research scientist at Princeton University, New Jersey. Since 1981 he was a Professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Since 1983 he served a Research program coordinator at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, Santa Barbara. From 1980 to 1981 and from 1990 to 1991 T. Ramakrishnan worked as a Consultant at American Telephone & Telegraph Company Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey. Also from 1990 to 1991 he was a Visiting professor at Princeton (New Jersey) University. Nowadays he works as the Emeritus Professor of Department of Physics at Banaras Hindu University.

He is a Fellow of Indian National Science Academy (council service, since 2004, president, since 2004); American Physical Society; Third World Academy of Sciences, Royal Society and Indian Academy of Sciences (president 2004-2006).
Tiruppattur is married to Meera Rao, on September 13, 1970 and has 2 children.
