He took up his current duties on 21 July 2015. Since joining United Nations Development Programme in 1992, he has held various positions in the United Nations system, including: Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) Deputy Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative in the Central African Republic Chief of the Consolidated Appeals Process (Civil Air Patrol) based in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Moscow, Russian Federation He has also worked in Brazil, Chile and Georgia. The holder of a post-graduate certificate in forced migration, a master"s degree in international affairs, with a specialization in economic and political development, and a bachelor"s degree in history, Toby Lanzer was educated at the University of Oxford, as well as Columbia University and the University of New Hampshire.
Lanzer was expelled from South Sudan on 1 June 2015 with no reason given by the South Sudanese government.
