(Although the global community has achieved some success i...)
Although the global community has achieved some success in endeavors such as eradicating smallpox, efforts to coordinate nations' actions in others--such as the reduction of drug trafficking--have not been sufficient. Identifying the factors that promote, or inhibit, successful collective action for an ever-growing set of challenges associated with globalization, Todd Sandler applies them to promoting global health, providing foreign assistance, controlling rogue nations, limiting transnational terrorism, and intervening in civil wars.

(This book presents a theoretical treatment of externaliti...)
This book presents a theoretical treatment of externalities (i.e., uncompensated interdependencies), public goods, and club goods. Aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students making their first serious foray into this branch of economics, the book will also interest professional economists wanting to discover what their colleagues in public economics have been working on in recent years. As such, it attempts to tie together the most recent contributions in public economics, available in many diverse sources. The book will be suitable for courses concerned with public expenditure analysis, where no other single source for this material is currently available. Applications, theory, and policy aspects of public expenditure analysis are presented. Useful new graphical tools are also included. Among the topics included are: Nash equilibria, Lindahl equilibria, club theory, preference-revelation mechanisms, Coase theorem, externalities, and game theory.

( This essay focuses on the future of multilateral develo...)
This essay focuses on the future of multilateral development assistance, in light of the lessons of aid effectiveness in the last fifty years, and bearing in mind emerging development issues. It examines the rationale for multilateral forms of assistance, going back to the Bretton Woods conference, and argues that the multilateral approach has been successful in some areas, such as pooling of lending risks, but not in others, such as controlling free-rider problems through common conditionality. For emerging development issues, particularly those of international public goods, multilateralism seems to be the logical venue for coordination. However, the free-rider problems of the past will be present even more strongly in this arena and these need to be taken into account in designing institutions of the future. The essay concludes by suggesting reform of the multilateral assistance system to make it a more effective global instrument for dealing with the development problems of the next century.

(The Political Economy of Terrorism: Second Edition presen...)
The Political Economy of Terrorism: Second Edition presents a widely accessible political economy approach to the study of terrorism. It applies economic methodology - theoretical and empirical - combined with political analysis and realities to the study of domestic and transnational terrorism. In so doing, the book provides both a qualitative and quantitative investigation of terrorism in a balanced up-to-date presentation that informs students, policy makers, researchers, and the general reader of the current state of knowledge. Included are historical aspects, a discussion of watershed events, the rise of modern-day terrorism, examination of current trends, the dilemma of liberal democracies, evaluation of counterterrorism, analysis of hostage incidents, and much more. The new edition expands coverage of every chapter, adds a new chapter on terrorist network structures and organization, accounts for changes in the Department of Homeland Security, and the USA Patriot Act, and insurance against terrorism. Rational-actor models of terrorist and government behavior and game-theoretic analysis are presented for readers with no prior theoretical training. Where relevant, the authors display graphs using data from International Terrorism: Attributes of Terrorist Events (ITERATE), the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), and other public-access data sets.
