Tada Tokan was born in 1890 in Akita, Japan.
When High Priest Detle, adherent of the Dalai Lama XIII, came to Kyoto in 1911 Tada learned Tibetan from him and accompanied him to India the following year.
In 1913 Tada entered Tibet and with the Dalai Lama's permission and became the first foreigner to join the Lamaist sect. For 10 years until 1923 he's stayed at the Lama temple.
Returning to Japan, Tokan was a lecturer at Tohoku University (1939-1943) and compiled a catalogue of Tibetan sutras. He also lectured at Tokyo University till 1951. In 1951 Tada was invited as lecturer at the America-Asia Research Institute at San Francisco and stayed there till 1954.
