Tokugoro Nakahashi

Education

In 1886 graduated from the Jurisprudence Department, Tokyo University and became a Justice Ministry official.

Career

Visit­ed Europe and the United States as a councilor of the Cabinet Legislative Bu­reau. After returning to Japan, in 1898 he was ap­pointed a secretary of the House of Repre­sentatives and Director General of the Railway Board. After leaving government service, he became president of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha (OSK Line) and restored the shipping firm to prosperity. In 1912 elected to the House of Repre­sentatives, and became a leader of the Seiyukai Party. In 1918 appointed Education Minister, and established a num­ber of new universities and colleges under a positive policy of Prime Minister Taka- shi Hara. In 1927 was appointed Commerce and Industry Minister and in 1931 Home Min­ister.

Interests

• His hobby was collection of toys and utensils in the shape of badger and called himself Rian-K-ojtf or Hermit of the Badger Den.
