Tokuhon was born in Kii (Wakayama Prefecture); original surname: Tabuse.

Tokuhon became a priest under Taien at the ojoji Temple (1783). Later leaving the temple wandered round the country till he visited the shrine of Saint Honen, after which he began preaching wherever he went. While touring the eastern districts he founded the Musashi Ichigyo-in Temple (1817).
