Tokuno Oda was initiated into priesthood at the age of 12.
In 1889, traveled in Siam in the suite of the Japanese Minister to that country. He brought to Japan Buddhist sutras from Siam (1890). Started compiling a comprehensive Buddhist dictionary (1898) and almost completed it before he died (1911). An authority on Buddhism in Southeast Asia. He wrote biographies of noted Buddhist priests in China and Japan.
