In 1967, Tom graduated from Los Angeles Police Academy. Later, in 1975, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Los Angeles Valley College.
During the period from 1963 till 1966, Lange served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. In 1967, Tom began a career of a homicide detective at Los Angeles Police Department, a post he held till 1996. Later, he worked as a private investigator, as well as certified instructor at California Department of Justice.
