A Republican running for his first elected office, he was elected in 2012 to succeed term-limited Paul Opsommer. Prior to his election, Leonard served as an assistant attorney general for the State of Michigan and was part of the Special Crimes Division of the Genesee County Prosecutor" General’ s Office. Leonard"s wife Jenell is the External and Strategic Coordinator for Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley.
Membership
Leonard is also the chairman of the DeWitt Public Safety Committee, a member of the Saint Johns Kiwanis Club, and a member of the DeWitt Lions Club.
