(Iscariot takes place in Ireland in the early 1990s, at a ...)
Iscariot takes place in Ireland in the early 1990s, at a time when the Irish church held far greater power than it would hold two decades later. It was a time before the Celtic Tiger, a time before the clerical abuse scandals came to light, a time when most Catholics went to Sunday mass, a time before divorce was permitted in Ireland, a time before birth control was available for over-the-counter purchase. The Irish monetary system was the punt, or pound; the euro had not yet been adopted.

In his novel Derrycloney, Tom Phelan brilliantly captures the voices and characters of a small community in the Irish countryside in the 1940s. The rural rituals, the local rivalries, the affections and disaffections - all are caught in richly textured language in what the author calls his "fanfare to the common men and women of my childhood".

(In 1913, before any rumors of war in Europe, Matthias Wre...)
In 1913, before any rumors of war in Europe, Matthias Wrenn and Con Hatchel - lifelong friends from Ballyrannel in the Irish midlands - decide to see the world at the king’s expense and join the British army. A year later, while en route to India, their troop ship is recalled and they soon find themselves in the European slaughterhouse that was World War I. As stretcher-bearers, the two men witness all too closely the nightmare of the battlefield and the trenches. Meanwhile, back home in Ireland, Con’s sister and Matthias’s lover, Kitty Hatchel, yearns for their safe return and reminds them of their carefree childhood, as well as their hopes for the future. But by the war’s end, the future they had all dreamed of is gone, replaced by anger, violence, and open rebellion in Ireland. And what little hope they have left may not be enough to sustain them, in this “a tour de force of writing, passionate, moving, and brilliant” (Kevin Baker, author of The Big Crowd).

(Is there a serial killer in Ireland? In the Irish midland...)
Is there a serial killer in Ireland? In the Irish midlands, two former members of the religious Order of St. Kieran, which once ran Dachadoo Industrial School for Boys, are murdered within weeks of each other. Their bodies are found nailed to the floor. Detectives Tom Breen and Jimmy Gorman are assigned to track down Nailer, as the killer has been nicknamed. They warn local clerical outcasts that Nailer may be working off a list. Pauline Byron and Mick McGovern, reporters for The Telegraph, are put on the story. As police and journalists work against each other to expose the killer, they discover that the actions of a small group of men almost forty years earlier are still resonating in the present. As Nailer continues to kill, Pauline Byron surmises he may be getting revenge for something that happened in Dachadoo School a long time ago.
