Thomas Wlaschiha is a German actor and voice actor. Internationally, he is known for his roles as Jaqen H'ghar in the second, fifth, and sixth seasons of the TV series Game of Thrones, as well as Sebastian Berger in the TV series Crossing Lines.
Background
Ethnicity:
His surname is of Czech origin, as his ancestors arrived from there around the beginning of the 19th century.
Wlaschiha was born on June 20, 1973, in Dohna, Bezirk Dresden, East Germany. Tom grew up with a desire of becoming an actor and during his teenage years, Tom drew inspiration from his uncle, an opera singer who used to perform to crowds even outside Germany.
Education
When Wlaschiha was 17 years old, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he traveled to Agawam, Massachusetts as an exchange student. He remained there for a year, acting in theater and studying English. He also speaks French, Italian, and Russian.
Then he studied at the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig.
Since 1998, Tom Wlaschiha has played mostly supporting roles in numerous German and international TV and film productions. In his first leading role, he portrayed Stephan in the 2000 gay milieu study No One Sleeps. In August 2011, he was cast as the convict and assassin Jaqen H'ghar in Season 2 of the HBO fantasy TV series Game of Thrones and has reprised his role in Seasons 5 and 6, starting in 2015. Since 2013, he has been starring in the crime series Crossing Lines as Kommissar Sebastian Berger, a German police officer.
On stage, Wlaschiha has performed with the Theater Junge Generation in Dresden from 1996 until 2000, with the Schauspielhaus Zürich in 2002, and with the Schauspiel Frankfurt in 2003. As a voice actor, Wlaschiha is heard in film dubs, audiobooks, and commercials. For some of his international work (e.g., Game of Thrones), Wlaschiha dubs himself in German.
Tom Wlaschiha is a German television, film, stage and voice actor and is one of Germany’s few actors that made it to Hollywood. Especially famous for his roles in the hit series Game of Thrones and Crossing Lines.
For his performance in Game of Thrones he was nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series by the Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2016.

Quotations:
"I really love theatre, as that is where I started out."
"The system in Germany is different, as you sign up with a company for two or three years, and you work exclusively with them; you can't do any film work on the side."
"For me, the fall of the wall came at the exact right time because, I mean, I was 17, basically I hadn't missed anything, unlike the generation of my parents, who were deprived of a lot of things. They couldn't travel, and they couldn't really get ahead in their professional careers. So for me, it was perfect timing."
"I grew up in East Germany, so we had to learn Russian in school.... I never thought it would come in handy... But being an actor, I've been able to use it quite a bit."
"Sometimes it still seems unreal just to board a plane and fly to America, because that's something that I'd always dreamed of, but I was completely sure would never happen, and sometimes, when I think about that, it still feels a bit unreal."
"At some point, when I was 14 or 15, the idea crossed my mind to become an actor... I hadn't been to the theater much... When I grew up, we had one TV channel, which was sufficient."
"Breaches of trust are difficult. I have a very high tolerance level and generally give people a second or third chance. But there are things at which I would draw the line. If, for example, someone would read my text messages or e-mails, that would be it for me."
"I believe a person who doesn't have any kind of addiction is rather boring. An addiction only becomes dangerous when you no longer have it under control. I smoke every now and again, but I can restrict myself. My grandfather lived to be 97 even though he smoked. His motto was that you can do anything, but in moderation."
