Sandström was selected 36th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1982 National Hockey League Entry Draft. Sandstöm played 983 career National Hockey League games, scoring 394 goals and 462 assists for 856 points, and also registered 1,193 career penalty minutes. A skilled power forward, he was effective when healthy but his career was marred by injuries due to his physical style of play.
After being acquired by the Wayne Gretzky-led Los Angeles Kings in a January 1990 trade for former 70 goal scorer Bernie Nicholls, Sandström formed a deadly one-two punch with Gretzky over the next three seasons.
Sandström"s time with the Kings, however, was marred by several serious injuries that included a 1990 fight that left him with a scratched cornea and broken cheekbone and a broken leg in the 1991 Smythe Division Finals. Sandström finished third in playoff scoring after Gretzky and Toronto"s Doug Gilmour.
