Tomiko Yamakawa was born on July 19, 1879 in Fukui Prefecture, Japan.
After graduating from Baika Girls High School (1895-1897), studied under Tekkan Yosano and then she entered the English Literature Department of Japan Women’s University in 1904.
Yamakawa Tomiko was waka poetess. She took interest in waka poem since her girlhood and played an active role with Akiko Yosano as an early female poet of a literary magazine "Myojo". In 1905 she published the collaborated anthology of poems "Koigoromo" with Akiko Yosano and Masako Masuda. Her poems are sentimental and full of pathos.
