Tomobayashi Mitsuhira (original personal name: Rokuro) was born on October 2, 1813 in Kawachi, Osaka, Japan.
Tomobayashi Mitsuhira was first a priest of the Shinshu Sect and studied Japanese classics from Morohei Kano and Nobutomo Ban. When the country was thrown into turmoil toward the close of the Tokugawa regime, Tomobayashi Mitsuhira abandoned religion and began taking active part in politics with other Loyalists. He was, however, captured and put to death at Kyoto during the Tenchu-gumi Affair (revolt of Tesseki Fujimoto and others against the Shogunate). Before his death he wrote a detailed history of the Tenchu-gumi Affair in 2 volumes.
