Sumitomo Tomochika was born in 1843, Japan. He was the son of Tomomi, twelfth head of the wealthy Sumitomo family in Osaka.
Tomochika maintained the family business, improved the equipment at Besshi Mine, enlarged the sales and production of copper and fostered friendly relations with the new Imperial government. Tomochika retired and was succeeded to the headship of the house by his eldest son, Tomotada.
