He was ordered to study surveying and navigation under Dutchmen in Nagasaki, because of his proficiency in mathematics.
Career
He served in the Shogunate's Western Literature Research Institute and its navy and as an auditor. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, he and Joun Kurimoto made recommendations to the government concerning national language reform.
