He was appointed by Nariaki Tokugawa, Lord of Mito, as a scholar attached to the Shikan (History Compilation Institute) of his clan.
Personality
Was good at historical research and noted for his erudition. Tomokiyo Oyamada attempted to harmonize Confucianism and Buddhism and disliked the school of learning of Norinaga Moto-ori.
