Sumitomo Tomoyoshi was born in 1668, Japan. He was the eldest son of Tomonobu.
Succeeded his father as the head of the family (1685). The most distinguished businessman in the family, he acquired Besshi Copper Mine in Shikoku which expanded the family fortune.
In 1714, he was called to Edo by the Shogunate and was appointed Head Copper Refiner and reminted bad coins for three years at the Shogunate Mint in Asakusa.
