Background
Sumitomo Tomozumi was born in 1824, Japan. The sixth son of Kimizumi Tokudaiji, brother of Kimmochi Saionji.

Career
He was adopted by the Sumitomo family (1892), and soon became an important figure in the Sumitomo group of industries which included mining, forestation, steel, fertilizer, banking, insurance and warehousing.
