He succeeded Chu Ching-wu who retired from HKUST in August 2009. Tony Chan worked at University of California, Los Angeles and at the National Science Foundation. Born in Hong Kong, Chan attended Salesian English School and Queen"s College in Hong Kong.
He is a co-founder of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics, an National Science Foundation-funded institute at University of California, Los Los Angeles He has been listed as an Inter-Services Intelligence Highly Cited Author in Mathematics by the Inter-Services Intelligence Web of Knowledge, Thomson Scientific Company. He also sits on the selection committee for the Mathematics award, given under the auspices of the Shaw Prize.
